Meet Our Bees
As part of our commitment to making a tangible impact in the sustainability efforts of the local community, Meadowbrook Inn began the process of creating a rooftop apiary in Spring of 2019. Our rooftop apiary, the first to be approved in the Town of Blowing Rock, features two hives of Italian hybrid honey bees. These types of bees are prized by beekeepers because of their gentle behavior and are known to be superb pollinators.
Sustainable Practices
We are proud to partner with Bee Kind Family Farm, who maintains the apiary and harvests wildflower honey that is produced by our very busy bees. Our on-site beekeeper tends to the honey bees for a couple hours on a weekly basis. The amount of time needed to cultivate the bees is dependent upon where they are in the development of their hive and their honey production.
The harvested wildflower honey is used by our Executive Chef in select signature dishes and sauces throughout the year and is also seasonally available for purchase at our Front Desk.
Heirloom Vegetable & Herb Garden
Our on-property heirloom vegetable and herb garden, which contributes to pollinator health, can be found adjacent to our duck pond and offers guests a chance to see a variety of vegetables and herbs that have been grown in the area for generations. During mid to late summer, vegetables and herbs harvested from the garden are used by our executive chef in many of our custom signature dishes for catered events at Meadowbrook Inn.
Certified Wildlife Habitat
Meadowbrook Inn is proud to be a Certified Wildlife Habitat by National Wildlife Federation. This certification recognizes our commitment to provide essential elements of wildlife habitat, such as food, water, cover, places to raise young, and sustainable practices.
Meadowbrook Inn Ducks
Creating a serene and enjoyable environment for all our guests, our pond and beautiful hotel grounds are the home to a delightful family of ducks! These adorable creatures have become an integral part of our hotel's ambiance, adding an extra touch of tranquility to your experience.
Complimentary duck food is available at our Front Desk to help feed the ducks. We kindly ask you to treat our feathered friends with kindness and respect during your stay.
